Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin

Called to Witness
2008 Easter Message from Bishop Jim Moriarty

March 2008

“Our shared task over the next four years will be to build up ministries and services at the local level and to encourage and support people as they come forward to serve the Church.”
Bishop Jim Moriarty

The Easter season is a time when we reflect on the call to witness to our faith. Our belief that 'he has risen' goes hand in hand with the call to help others know and live the Gospel. We all have a part to play; from our baptism all of us share the one vocation to proclaim the Good News.

Towards the end of last year, we issued a report on the REACH OUT campaign that has been on-going in our diocese since 2004. People were invited to give their views and to identify what should happen now.

A few hundred people completed a special survey and the results were very positive. It is clear that the campaign initiatives such as the Christmas gift, the diocesan stand at the Ploughing championship, our involvement in World Youth Day, our faith formation resources and ministry training were very well received. 75% of respondents said these initiatives were a good or excellent response to the pastoral priorities set by people in 2004.

Importantly, 85% of respondents said that our underlying method
(Listen - Act Together - Report) was good or excellent. On that basis, we plan to start a new campaign that will again stretch over four years with a strong united focus on agreed key issues
.
Drawing on the survey feedback and from on-going discussions with priests, there is a consensus that we should focus on ministries and services at the local level so that we will be better equipped to serve families, our youth, newcomers and those alienated from the Church.

We are a changing Church. Of the 88 K&L priests in active ministry,
34 are more than 40 years ordained. We are all concerned about how we will cope with the emerging reality of fewer priests. At the same time, the call is not only for vocations to the priesthood but to promote and nurture the ministry of lay people. A changing Church can also be a more vibrant, inclusive Church. In many ways, this can be an Easter moment, a time when we see new life and experience a new grace.

Our shared task over the next four years will be to build up ministries and services at the local level and to encourage and support people as they come forward to serve the Church. This will be our main objective, but obviously it is not the only task facing us individually or as a diocese.
In the coming months, we will put together a plan for the coming four years that will seek to fulfill our main objective in various ways. Pastoral planning will need to be linked to financial planning as we move more towards the employment of lay ministers and resource people. We will need to invest more in faith formation and ministry training. We welcome any suggestion you may have on these issues.

In order to act together, we need to continue to strengthen our communication channels and to hold special conferences where people can come together as this plan takes shape. Such gatherings should become a standard part of diocesan life and act as a springboard for further renewal.

Within our overall plan, we will continue to promote the call to ordained ministry. Starting this April, the Irish Church is marking the next twelve months as the Year of Vocations. This is a very timely initiative and one that our diocese will be very actively promoting.

What was so encouraging about the REACH OUT campaign was the call from people for our diocese to be pro-active. We now have another tremendously positive mandate, a common goal and a shared task. With an Easter faith, let us again step forward to proclaim Christ and build up his Church in Kildare & Leighlin.

Jim Moriarty
Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin

Survey Results

The REACH OUT report was sent to every home in the diocese via
An Post. Within the report was an invitation for people to give their views. A special survey form was made available in parishes and on our diocesan website. The survey returns were processed by the Research & Development office in Maynooth. The full results and commentary are now available on the main diocesan website - www.kandle.ie

Suggestions

As stated in the Bishop's message, people are very welcome to submit suggestions as to how we can best 'build up ministries and services at the local level and encourage and support people as they come forward to serve the Church'. You can forward responses to Bishop's House, Carlow (email-bishop@kandle.ie) or visit our new interactive website ¬www.kandle.ie/blog - where people can offer and read comments.

Communication

As the plan for the coming four years takes shape, the details will be communicated through all possible channels, including the diocesan KandLe bulletin that now appears weekly in the Nationalist papers.
Likewise we will be advertising when special conferences will take place to advance our shared task.
One of the first of these gatherings will be a morning for liturgy groups, baptism teams and priests in the Standhouse Hotel (Curragh) on Saturday 12th April. We also plan to have a meeting for those involved in Parish Finance sometime in May. Details to follow.
