Maher/Connors Commemoration on Sunday 15th June 2003 at Ardristan Graveyard

The Tullowphelim Historical Society comprises of a group of people with an interest in the local history and in the lives and events of people from this area who have made a name for themselves in historical events both nationally and internationally.

Each year for the last eighteen years the society have published a local historical magazine known as OGHAM.

The Editor of the current magazine is John Keogh. Articles in Volume 18 (00/01) include - Borough of Carlow 1874, Eliza Davis, The Darcys, Clonegal Raparees, Kilkea Castle, Knights of the Shire 1865, Railway to Carlow, The Kepple Name, Ballykealy Estate, Mullawn Graveyard Tombstone Inscriptions, Maps of the Graveyard, G.A.A. Photographs, Tony Maher Recalls, Membership List. The current OGHAM Magazine is available at a cost of €5 from most shops in Tullow (ISSNO790-6226)

In Volume 17 (00/01) of OGHAM John Keogh in his editorial wrote "Welcome to a new millennium. In time of prosperity societies like ours find it difficult to recruit help and fresh interest in our quest to preserve local interest in the documentation of local history. In order for our magazine to continue we are going to  need more input from local people and societies in the area. This can be in photographic, print, or verbal forms, it is hoped that next year we will do a full breakdown on the history of local organisations in the area.

It is all too easy to criticise the efforts of these organisations but we realise the thankless time and effort that goes into the annual workload that they take on for the good of the community. You may ask what can I do? If you have any old photographs 1950-1980 we will print them. If you come across any information, newspaper cuttings or stories in reference to the general area we will compose an article or feature for you in next years magazine. In conclusion I would like to thank all those who have contributed to our magazine both Financially or Literally down through the years for, without this valuable help, we would have no Magazine or Museum. OGHAM is in its 17th edition all thanks to the many subscribers in the past".

TULLOW MUSEUM

Another project of the Tullowphelim Historical Society is The Tullow Museum on Bridge Street, Tullow. In Volume 4 (87/88) of OGHAM in an article Museum Musings Billy Wright wrote " Tullow Museum in its picturesque home in the little church beside the Bridge over the River Slaney is still a source of enjoyment and nostalgia to many visitors and locals alike. So much is crammed into so little which is why so many people visit again and again. Another reason is that in small ways changes occur, new (old) items are donated, additional information on existing items is received. Change is constant".

And in the years that followed much change has occurred. The Tullowphelim Historical Society have purchased the old church, and with the help of a grant from Carlow Co Co., and the enormous generosity of the people of Tullow to our fund raising effort the building has been renovated.

The museum houses a huge range of items of a historical nature, to personal items belonging to Sir Earnest Shakelton, and Fr. John Murphy of Boulavogue, as well as photographs, bill heads, journals, and many other items from Tullow's past
