FORWARD STEPS

Family Resource Centre

There are two Family Resource Centres in Co. Carlow, one in Bagnelstown, one in Tullow. The Tullow Family Resource Centre is known as Forward Steps, and is located on Mill Street. While in Carlow Town there is a (C.D.P.) Community Development Project which offers the same facilities.

PROFILE OF FORWARD STEPS RESOURCE CENTRE

In 1999 Joan Mooney a support worker with Framework for the South East Region made contact with various agencies, organisations and key people in the Tullow area with a view to establishing a Family Resource Centre.

Notices were put in all newsletters and local newspapers and after an initial public meeting, a pattern of weekly meetings was established. From these meetings a Management Committee was formed and training was carried out. A door to door needs analysis was carried out to identify the individual and collective needs of the people in the parish of Tullow which includes Grange and Ardattin.

A public meeting was held in October 2000. All agencies, clubs and organisation in the community were invited with a view to establishing their needs, as well us introducing them to the concept of a Family Resource Centre. The objective of this meeting was to foster a partnership approach within our community.

The weekly meeting and training continued. A board of directors was formed A three-year plan was drawn up. The key aims, actions and expected impact of the plan are a direct response to the needs analysis undertaken by the management committee in April/May 2001.

In May 2001 a premises was secured on Mill Street, Tullow, Co. Carlow. The premises became operational in November 2001. Around the time the Centre opened it held an art competition in conjunction with 2nd students in Tullow Community School to design a logo for the centre. The winning artist was Christine Connolly a student at the Tullow Community School.

Forward Steps fosters a culture of equality of all, inclusion and participation of all minorities and those who experience social exclusion. We will also recognise the skills and talents of each individual and will encourage them to reach their full potential. We are committed to preventing discrimination and promoting equal opportunities for people who are experiencing isolation.

During November and December 2002 Forward Steps organised an art course for people who had never undertaken an art course. Here are some of the participants at the exhibition of their work in the centre when they were presented with certificates of achievement.
