Here we are once again at the beginning of the season of receding days and lengthening nights, a time of closing in and shutting down which is called Autumn So settle down in a nice snug chair and have a read of the Buzz - so rare. And if you have any comments made, send then in for all to read. Snippets small or articles long all are welcome in The Buzz.

First and foremost in this autumnal issue is to wish a very happy birthday to our very own Josephine Britton who is celebrating her fiftieth birthday on 14th September. She has much planned to mark this passing of time and we wish her all the best for the next fifty years.

By the time this edition goes to print the two Italian volunteers (who will be helping out for a period of six months) will have arrived and hopefully settled in nicely. Their names are Elena Masneri and Fausto Faccetti and we send out a great big WELCOME to them both. A large part if not all of their working time will be spent helping out on the Social Programme so everyone will get a good chance to get to know them. Bear in mind that their grasp of the English language is not as good as our so we can all help them in their endeavours to improve upon it.

Congratulations to Anthony Kirwan who has just become a dad for the first time. The only details we have at present are that it's a boy (7pounds 6 ounces) who was born on 4th September. All the best to the three of you from us all.

Contemplating doing a course this autumn? Then see the Carlow VEC brochure on the residents notice board and make your pick.

See the information board in the new communications room for information on Citizens Information, CANDO (Carlow Area Network development) and so much more.

Happy birthday to Mary Quigley and Lilly Browne, Ann Curry and any others we might have forgotten to mention recently.

A continuation of the exert from the Book of Ecclesiastes supplied by Tony McEvoy...lf thou woulst get a friend, prove him first and be not hasty to credit him. For some man is a friend for his own occasion, and will not abide in the day of thy trouble... Again some friend is a companion at the table, and will not continue in the day of affliction ,...If thou be brought low, he will be against thee, and will hide from thy face...

Remember Spring!!! Although it seems a long way off now is the time to plant those daffodils, crocus and snowdrops if you want the perfect Spring display in your garden. And speaking of `perfect displays' doesn't Patricia Keogh deserve a medal for the assortment of hanging baskets and planters she has on her patio. It certainly outshines all the others and is even better than last years display by her. Well done!

The winner of last months competition to correctly name the airline was a combined entry by Susan Abbey and Gerry Andrews who will both be receiving a prize. The answer was of course the newly formed Australian Airlines.

When out driving in the soon to be approaching long dark nights of Autumn and Winter remember to take extra care. Also have your car/van or what ever checked out and serviced before the bad weather arrives. Batteries in particular have a habit of giving up the ghost as winter approaches so you have been warned!

The pond out front of the building has of late become quite murky! But don't despair as the situation is under control and the waters will soon be crystal clear again with the help of a friend namely Sean Doyle.

The following are a selection of jokes and etc. supplied by resident Patricia Kenny Fagan...
Q. When you buy eggs how can you be absolutely sure that there are no chickens in them?
A. Buy duck eggs of course!
Q. Why did King Kong so desperately want to join the army?
A. Because he wanted to study gorilla warfare.

Did you know that BMW have produced a 20ft. long stretched limo version of the MINI COOPER complete with a hot tub? (and six wheels to boot!)

The next issue of Peachy's Patch/The Buzz will be out in early October and we might be having another little competition so get you thinking caps on ... you have been warned
Until then all the best from Gerry

PEACHY'S PATCH

SEPTEMBER 2005

By Patricia Keogh

Hello again everybody and welcome again to yet another new month. This joke is entitled "I bet you wish you had thought of this when you were a teenager."

A mother passing by her daughter's bedroom was astonished to see the bed was made and everything was cleaned up. Then she saw an envelope on the bed. It was addressed "Mum." With the worst premonition, she opened the letter and read it with trembling hands.

Dear Mum,
It is with great sorrow that I'm writing to you. I had to elope with my new boyfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with you and Dad .I've been finding real passion with Ahmed, and he is so nice, even with all his piercing, tattoos, beard and motorcycle clothes. But it's not only the passion, Mum, I'm pregnant, and Ahmed said that we will be very happy. He already owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. He wants to have many more children with me, and that's now one of my dreams, too. Ahmed taught me that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone, and we'll be growing it for ourselves and trading it with his friends for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime, please pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so that Ahmed can get better. He sure deserves it! Don't worry about me, Mum. I'm 15, and I know how to take care of myself. Someday I'm sure we'll be back so you can get to know your grandchildren.

Your daughter
Judith
PS: Mum, none of the above is true. I'm over at a neighbour's house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than my report card, which is in the centre draw of my desk. I love you.
Please call when it is safe to come home..........

For September, I'm going to write the "so far" life-story of Lily Cullinane.

Lily was born in 1946. Her parents were Limerick farmers. Her late father was called Padjo, while her still sprightly mother (who is now in her 80s) is called Peg. Like me, I'd say that a few of you didn't know that Lily has a twin sister call Mag, She also has 2 younger brothers called Jim and Ned.

She suffers from CP or Cerebral Palsy and she came to live here in St.Patrick's in 1969.

Lily loves spending time with all her family including her 8 nieces and nephews when she goes back home to Limerick every Summer for a couple of months and also several weeks over the Christmas period. She always comes back refreshed and `raring to go' back to her job in the Delta Workshop in Carlow where she has gone to work 5 days a week for the last X number of years. Apparently, she also worked in the Rehab for a few years before that. Lily told me that in the Delta Centre they have actually (last July ) already started to make Christmas decorations. She also helps out at the annual Delta fashion show by giving out the brochures.

Collecting ornaments and key rings is a favourite past-time of Lily's, she is also very fond of window shopping, loves listening to music, following the soaps on TV, (a girl after my own heart) and as she herself says "I'm always up for the craic"

She is not a great one for travelling, but she has been to Lourdes a few times and loved it. So maybe another visit is overdue eh!

Just a few months ago now, LILY, with help of her friend and carer Kay Smithers completely refurnished her room and they both made a grand job of it-congratulations.

When asked what she misses from home while living here, Lily, replied that maybe after her family no-one as she's very happy and contented.
A very good and satisfying endorsement for Tullow Cheshire
